Where can your engineering degree take you?

When you think about your career, what are the things that really matter to you? If a good salary, job security and job satisfaction are high up on your list, engineering could be a great choice. It’s a much more varied career than many people realise, and you might be surprised by how far it can take you.

How to get a great engineering degree

If you want to go into engineering, you’ll normally need A-levels (or the equivalent) in Maths and Physics. Design Technology can also be helpful, and you’ll need Chemistry if it’s chemical engineering that appeals to you. You’ll need to find the following:

  • The right place to study – in the UK, the universities with the best reputation for engineering are Bristol, Southampton, Leeds, Nottingham and Edinburgh. Each has its own way of working, and some have particular specialities, so try to visit a few before you start applying in order to get a feel for what they offer. If you’re willing to study abroad, you could try MIT, Stanford, ETH Zürich or the National University of Singapore.
  • The right specialism – although some choices need to be made early on (for instance, whether you want to study Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering), there will be other decisions to be made as you progress. Developing a specialism will help you stand out when it comes to finding jobs, and if it’s something you’re really passionate about, employers will be impressed by that.
  • The right placement – education is great, but in a profession such as this, it’s really important to have experience. If you can get a good placement either during your final summer or after you finish university, you’ll be in a much stronger position when it comes to competing for the best jobs. Your university’s careers office may be able to help you with this, or you can try writing to companies directly to enquire.

A world of opportunities

One of the most exciting things about engineering qualifications is that they’re easy to transfer between different environments. They are also highly sought-after. Many graduates take advantage of this by finding jobs abroad in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, where salaries can be really high. Others choose to travel at different stages in their life, sometimes on a project basis, meaning that they always have the opportunity to experience something new.

Inside an engineering company

One of Britain’s most successful engineering companies is Meggitt, which works internationally in the fields of energy, defence and aerospace engineering. If you check out FAQ’s about Sir Nigel Rudd, you’ll see that the company has enjoyed considerable success over the past few years. With around 10,000 employees already, it’s always on the lookout for talent, and despite its size, it has a good reputation for mentoring and support. Everything hinges on the sort of efficient internal structure that engineers ought to be good at!

Engineering can put you at the forefront in a changing world and give you the chance to work hands-on with lots of exciting technology. What’s not to like?
